Now why would Lyn a successful business woman in the field of marketing research and a former public school teacher along with Chris a successful Wall Street salesman for 20 years want to run a summer camp like this? It is actually quite simple and logical to understand. Both Chris and Lyn have a great affection for life in the outdoors. The vacation time we took over the first 17 years of marriage consisted of canoeing and camping in remote areas of New England and Canada. Our kids have been camping in remote areas of Canada since Catharine was 3 and Anna who couldn’t yet walk had just turned 1.

American Wanderer is the product of our attempt to buy a traditional girls summer camp in Vermont on the shores of Lake Champlain. This was the camp Lyn attended for 10 years as a child and returned to, with our two daughters as campers and counselor for 3 summers. We realized that we were not going to buy the camp in Vermont at a price that made economic sense.  Never missing the opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons, Chris in short order planned a trip, bought a travel trailer, loaded the truck and trailer with bikes, generator, canoes and all our gear for a journey/expedition across America. It was one of Chris’s dreams to travel across America to see all the American Wonders of the West and except for one trip to Texas had done all his exploring east of the  Mississippi.  9700 miles later we made it back home having had the time of our lives.

We realized that we had just given our children something that everyone should experience. We decided to  create our own summer camp and use the 83.6 million acres of the National Parks as our camp. We could provide all that a traditional summer camp provides at the same time showing the campers the wonders of America. Thus, the birth of our third child “American Wanderer ” who turns 11 this summer!

American Wanderer is the next generation of a traditional summer camp for boys and girls ages 11-17. Our Cabins roll and our Camp moves. Our Campers and Guides explore some of the most magnificent parks in the world - all right here in America. We offer 4 distinct 2 week sessions exploring over 34 Parks in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.
